Sheik Zayed Mosque | Abu Dhabi Photographer

Our family went for Iftar the other day at Sheik Zayed Mosque. This is probably Abu Dhabi’s most famous landmark, and deservedly so – it’s an amazing building, only opened about 18 months ago, which is the second largest mosque in the world, holding approximately 40,000 worshipers. It’s also one of the only mosques in the country which is open to non-muslims. These first two shots are from the car as we were driving up.  Sheik-Zayed-Mosque1Sheik-Zayed-Mosque3I’ve read that the mosque caters iftar for 15,000 people daily during Ramadan. I can believe it – there were bus loads of people being dropped at the gates and making their way to one of the iftar areas.Sheik-Zayed-Mosque2Most people had iftar inside tents (of which I think there were about 15) but the latecomers had to sit on matting laid outside – on the day we went the women and children were also outside and I actually really liked that as you got to experience that the prayer was called right as the sun dipped over the horizon – plus it was a lovely orangey sunset. We all got a box with dates, an apple, chicken and rice with salad, and then several drinks and a yoghurt.  Many of the mosques around town have tents set up providing iftar meals too. It’s a month of community, charity and giving.Sheik-Zayed-Mosque4Here’s Saffy breaking her fast… as foreigners here in the U.A.E. we’re not obliged to fast (and of course children don’t have to) but during Ramadan we’re not able to indulge in any of the haram, or forbidden activities which of course includes eating and drinking, smoking, kissing or intimacy with your spouse whilst in public during fasting hours. Sheik-Zayed-Mosque5After iftar we went for a wander around the outside of the mosque.  Non muslims aren’t allowed in during prayer times, and it being Ramadan prayers stretch all night long from dusk till dawn again so these are only external pictures.Sheik-Zayed-Mosque6Sheik-Zayed-Mosque7Sheik-Zayed-Mosque8Sheik-Zayed-Mosque9

I really wished I’d brought my tripod but sometimes being a Mummy and juggling 2 kids and a camera you just can’t carry any more! (T was there with us but of course had to eat his iftar seperately). It’s just such a stunning building…. one last look….Sheik-Zayed-Mosque11

Thanks for the comments on my Ramadan pictures – I’m really enjoying my little personal project and making myself get out there and take photos of what life in Abu Dhabi is like, and iftar at the mosque was certainly an experience not to be missed.

until next time, Kirsty x

How’s that for a doting Daddy to be? But you can see how he would be – just look how totally glowing his lovely wife is…E&L110909-013Their little girl is bound to be a little surfer chick – Dad to be even asked if we could incorporate his fantastic hand painted surf board into the shoot – and you know how I love it when people want to make the shoot about things they love – yeah!!!!E&L110909-02

Ramadan – Food | Abu Dhabi Photographer

Aaaahhhh, Ramadan…. one of the reasons I love it is the food! And I don’t think I’m the only one – my Emirati friends often tell me that despite the fasting they fear putting weight on during Ramadan because of the divine iftar food. There are so many things that are special for this time of year. I guess that’s similar in lots of religious celebrations – I know it’s difficult to prize a mince pie from my hand at Christmas!!

I haven’t actually been to many iftars this year – but I’ve still managed to visit my local sweets and pastry shops and stock up on special food. Being vegetarian the savory dishes don’t interest me quite as much as the sweets!! heee heee!! But I can’t resist falafels… look how crispy they are…ramadanfood1

Ramadan

The sun sinks down low

And the long day is done

With dates and fresh fruit

our Iftar has begun

All day we have fasted

With joy in our hearts

For pure throughts and deeds

Set this fair month apart

We feel for the hungry, the helpless and weak

And master our hunger, our throughts and our speech

When the sun sinks down low

And the day’s at an end

We break bread togethether

With family and friends

Ramadan Poem by Piyu Majumdar (used with permission).ramadanfood3

ramadanfood2I love the poem – it really sums up Ramadan so well in so few words – it’s just one peom about this part of the world featured in the book “Children of the Sun – growing up in the Gulf” which Piyu colaborated on with fantastic photographer Paul Thuysbaert.

Most people will recognise this place – Lebanon Flower Restuarant – I love this image – these guys definitely look happy that it’s iftar time and they can break their fast.ramadanfood6

Right, I’m off for some yummy treats now, Hope you’re all having a wonderful Ramadan, Kirsty x

Kirsty - Oh, and if anyone can tell me the names of the various sweets so I don’t just have to point to things I’d be very greatful! Thanks, x

Sarah B - Really nice poem, and the food makes me hungry – it looks gooooood!!

Style your Shoot – Primary Colours | Abu Dhabi Lifestyle Photographer

I’m loving the bold bright colours of this combo. Nothing clashing, yet not all the same. And Mum and Dad will look great together in those fresh colours when we do a few of them together. The plain bottom halves would also make it nice and easy to change tops half way through the shoot for a totally different look too.primary-coloursHappy Stylin’, Kirsty x

It’s Nappy Time | Abu Dhabi Baby Photographer

This is what my drying rack looks like on nappy wash day – it’s the most colourful day of the week.nappies

In case I’ve not mentioned it before, I totally love my cloth nappies and they are sooooooo easy to use here with our abundant sunshine and heat.  If you’re interested in finding out more about cloth nappies – wonder how they work, how easy/difficult they are to use, the environmental benefits, the financial benefits, etc etc then there’s a nappuccino (or nappy Q&A session) being held next Tuesday September 15th. Email me for more details and a map.

Hope to see you there, Kirsty x

Tracy - really colourful! I’m quite sad at the thought that in about a year we will be finished with nappies :( Cloth ones are so cute :)

Busy Times * Abu Dhabi Family Photographer

Times have been busy and exciting for this family recently. Not only have they welcomed gorgeous new baby Hugo into their family, but big sister Belinda started school this week too. So I’ll start out with this picture which I just LOVE of Belinda and Hugo.030909-01

Of course, we can’t not mention adorable middle child Alex – he definitely kept me busy and on my toes during our session – mostly with jumping on Mum and Dad’s bed!!! But that’s just the kind of fun I love to capture. He and big sis rolled and jumped around lots!030909-03030909-02

And the adorable threesome…. yes, 1, 2, 3 awwwwww…..030909-05

Mum and Dad, lots more piccies to come in your gallery. It was great to spend an afternoon with you during such busy, busy times – speak soon, Kirsty x

Louise - Gorgeous – the top photo is just adorable, as is the one of the little boy

Christina - They’re cuties!! Hope their parents treasure these for many years to come!

10 minutes to Iftar | Abu Dhabi Photographer

Most photographers have personal projects ongoing in the background, behind all their professional work, that they wish they had more time to devote to. My current one has a time limit - trying to capture some images of what Ramadan is here in Abu Dhabi. It’s a month that means different things to different people, but I hope to make a few blog posts showing some of the things I’ve seen.

This first set of pictures is of the going-on’s in my block 10 minutes before iftar. I live in possibly the craziest, busiest, most congested part of town – really, it’s madness to live round here. But it’s also vibrant and friendly and diverse, and I love living here (apart from the parking and roadwork issues!!!) I took a walk around my ‘hood the other night at 6:30pm. 10-15 minutes before iftar – the breaking of the fast. There was an air of anticipation, people who are feeling grumpy for those late afternoon slump hours (because they’re been fasting since sometime around 4am) start to perk up at the thought of breaking their fast – not only with the eating of food.  The cafes and restaurants are cooking up a storm as people crowd around to buy their iftar favourites. This first two are at a Lebanese place right by my flat.iftar6

The mosque in my block as the sun goes down.iftar2

At the local bakery – man, was it hot in there – I was snapping away from the open window and was roasting – those guys work in there in that crazy heat without eating or drinking all day – hats off to them – and they were really friendly and chatty too and didn’t mind their photo being taken (it’s very important to ask permission in the UAE).iftar5These two guys, one of whom was from the bakery, and the other from the fruit shop next door were so happy about breaking their fast – and going about it the healthy way with some fruit. They asked to see the pictures so I took them a copy a couple of days later. I love the dusk glow on them cos this was literally as the mosque was calling right behind us, which meant it was exactly sunset time.iftar1And finally, as everyone’s eating the whole dynamic of the neighbourhood changes – the usually packed barbers (you can not imagine how many there are in one block – seriously!) are empty and the parking lots are jam packed full. No chance of getting your car out until iftar has finished.iftar3Enjoy, Kirsty x

Tracy - love it!

Rebecca Lawson - So interesting to see what life over there is like – Ramadan must be quite an experience – will look forward to more pictures
